Cranes are an integral part of any civil engineering. These have evolved with time and come as a handy tool for moving objects from one place to another. Unlike other crane models, these are fixed. A long tower is mounted on the ground and has a movable jib which moves objects from one place to another on the site of work. The jib consists of a hoist which is used to lift the load with the help of a drum. It comes with a chain or rope which is wrapped around it. This drum either runs manually or is operated pneumatically. The end of the chain attached to the drum has a hook which is used to lift the objects.
Unlike other cranes, jib cranes find application for commercial purpose and military ships. Self-supported jobs are the most commonly used ones. They have the pillar mounted on the ground.
Common Types Of Jib Cranes:
1. Floor mounted crane
2. Wall mounted (fixed) crane
3. Wall mounted (traveling) crane
Floor Mounted Type
As apparent from the name, the floor mounted ones have their pillar grounded on the ground. They are self-supporting ones and are very commonly used. They have the vertical bar mounted on the concrete foundation. They are generally used to share the load of the crane. These can rotate 360 degrees and are operated manually.
Wall Mounted Type (Fixed)
Unlike the floor mounted ones, these cranes are fixed horizontally on the wall. Their working mechanism is similar to that of the floor mounted, but it doesn’t have a vertical boom. The RCC column bracket which is present on the vertical shaft allows around 200 degrees rotation, thus ensuring free movement without barging on to the floor.
Wall Mounted Type(Traveling)
The design of this is similar to that of fixed wall mounted type of cranes. It is able to cover the lengthwise area of neat building columns. It has specially designed columns. The crane moves along a runway track. Rotation is not part of the functioning of this crane.
Important Points To Consider Before Buying Jib Cranes?

- Purpose of use- This is the most important point that you need to consider. The size and weight of the objects are important, and so are the external measurements. Another point that you must consider is whether you’re moving a single object or a pile of items and how firmly they’re wrapped or pressed. Most things can be lifted with a sling, yet in the event that your items should be lifted in an exceptional manner, it can affect the effectiveness of the jib crane also. So make sure that you consider this aspect.
- Check the General Arrangement drawing or GA of the crane– Analyzing the GA of the crane will help you find out what is not included in the purchase. You must ask the following questions:
- Does the crane adhere to the right Australian Standards?
- What are the servicing requirements?
- Are there any servicing requirements?
- How easy is it to acquire parts in case they get sabotaged?
- Know the local codes- Well, if it’s the first time that you are using jib cranes, you must know that in a certain part of the city and villages, it is important to take the permission from the local authorities. Failing to do so may put some legal trouble on you. So make sure you check for the local codes before planning to install them.
